Gewurztraminer, Lenswood, South Australia
Gestalt was born in 2012 from a single wine made from a stunning Grenache vineyard in Williamstown, South Australia. Now based in the Adelaide Hills, the label has grown organically each year in the search for similar quality vines from the Hills, Barossa Valley, and Clare regions.
Our winemaking philosophy is based on how to most lightly handle premium fruit to realise the greatest balance and complexity in the finished drink. To do this all grapes are hand-harvested from carefully selected, small-scale vineyards using organic practices to maintain healthy vines and soils. When the fruits of this labor get to the winery in pristine condition, most of the work is already done. To retain the freshness, intensity, and structure which rewards this approach, we use natural ferments and minimal intervention all the way to bottling. The wines are transferred by gravity post-fermentation, and are typically left unfined and unfiltered.
Anthony is a graduate of the Adelaide University Viticulture and Oenology program, specialising in wine science, with research interests in wine aroma chemistry and vine physiology. He first learnt the art of winemaking working for the Spinifex label in the Barossa Valley and Deviation Road in the Adelaide Hills. His focus centers on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Grenache, and exploring new stylistic possibilities for unusual and under-appreciated varieties.
After discovering what he really wanted to do when he grew up, Craig moved from Newcastle to Adelaide in 2008 to pursue his interest in winemaking. Four years later he graduated from the University of Adelaide’s Viticulture and Oenology program, receiving the SA Wine Industry Association Silver Medal. He developed his winemaking practice while working in McLaren Vale for Kangarilla Road and Gemtree, and joined Gestalt in 2015 to help make more of the delicious wine this label has become renowned for.
